Among the vast Kansas steppe lived a girl Ellie. Her father, farmer John, worked all day in the field, his mother Anna was busy with household chores.

They lived in a small van, removed from the wheels and put on the ground. The setting of the house was poor: an iron stove, a wardrobe, a table, three chairs and two beds. Near the house, at the very door, a “hurricane cellar” was dug out. In the cellar, the family sat out during storms.

A flat steppe stretched all the way to the horizon. In some places we could see the same poor houses as John’s house. Around them were arable land, where farmers sowed wheat and corn. Ellie knew all the neighbors well for three miles around. In the west lived Uncle Robert with his sons Bob and Dick. In the house in the north lived old Rolf, who made wonderful windmills for children.

When Ellie got bored, she called Totoshka, a funny little dog, and went to visit Dick and Bob, or went to Grandpa Rolf, who never returned from homemade toys. The brothers for some reason called the dog "Gandoshka" and Ellie sometimes also followed them.

Dick and Bob were always very happy when Ellie came. The three of them hid behind the barn and began to play "the doctor." Usually the boys were "doctors"; they forced the "patient" to undress, and then diligently examined and groped. Once Dick suggested that Ally become a doctor and assured her that his process urgently needed a massage. The girl was both scared and curious, but all the most interesting things always end in a bad way, as we know. At that very moment, when Ally took in her hands awesome housekeeping, the mother of the twins looked in at the barn. As a result, all three of them were mentally whipped by their fathers. At the same time, the parent of the twins, winking, offered to change: he would be flogged by Ally, and her father would be boys. So they did. At first, the girl got a few light slaps with a palm on the pope, she decided that everything worked out - but then the belt came in and was given out so that she could not sit for a week.

With the old Rolf, too, everything was not easy. No, he did good toys, but before the gift he would surely crawl his hands under the dress. If it were Bob or Dick with soft palms, then Ellie would have nothing against it, but the hands of the old man, hardened by the work of the old man, painfully scratched the skin. Besides, he smelled awful from his mouth.

So the girl’s favorite entertainment was to lure Gandoshka to her and, pulling her pantalonchiki lower down, to offer her dog to lick. Not to say that he liked it, but if not to feed and promise a tasty stone for a couple of days, the pet became obedient and diligent.

One summer evening, Ellie sat on the porch and read a fairy tale out loud. Anna was washing clothes.

Caused by the magic of Gingema, the hurricane reached Kansas and approached John's house every minute. Far off in the horizon clouds were gathering, lightning flashed among them.

Anna rushed to the cellar, opened the lid.

But Totoshka, frightened by the roar of the storm and the incessant rumble of thunder, ran into the house and hid there under the bed, into the farthest corner. Ellie did not want to leave her pet alone and rushed after him into the van. And at that time an amazing thing happened.

The house turned two, or three times, like a merry-go-round. He was in the middle of the hurricane. A whirlwind swirled it, lifted it up and carried it through the air.

A scared Ellie appeared in the door of the van with Totoshka in her arms. What to do? Jump to the ground? But it was too late: the house was flying high above the ground ...

The hurricane was raging, and the little house, swaying, rushed through the air. Totoshka, dissatisfied with what was going on around, ran around the dark room with frightened barking. Ellie, perplexed, sat on the floor, clutching her head in her hands. But time passed, and the house was still flying. Ellie climbed onto the bed and lay down, hugging Totoshka. Under the roar of the wind, gently shaking the house, Ellie fell fast asleep.
