Ellie knew all the neighbors well for three miles around.

The guys were always very happy when Ellie came. The three of them hid behind the barn and began to play "the doctor." Men, dressed in blue velvet caftans and narrow trousers, were no taller than she was.
There was a noise from the trees and a woman came out into the clearing, surrounded by the same little men.
She was wearing a white robe and importantly there were four more men in front of the three men behind. Tiny little stars glittered on her pointed hat and mantle.

Approaching the girl, these timid little people smiled amiably and somewhat timidly, but the woman looked at her with obvious bewilderment.
